  • JAN BLOCKX - DE HERBERGPRINSES (Princess of the Inn) (integral audio recording)

As a teenager I discovered opera through Leo Riemens ‘Great Operas Book’. One by one I collected anything from Aida to Tannhäuser and ultimately even the rarest works, except two: De herbergprinses (Princess of the Inn) and De bruid der zee (Bride of the Sea) by Jan Blockx. No recordings in any kind of form were thought to exist of these operas. It took a full 30 years of research to finally discover that, in the 1960s, the last performances of these works ever were, unexpectedly, privately recorded! Apart from Herbergprinses and Bruid der Zee even Liefdelied (Love Song), the third part of the Blockx opera trilogy on city-life, sea-life and land-life proved to have been recorded in the late 1960s. For those interested in Flemish opera, listening to these recordings (libretti and 150+ page Dutch/English pdf-booklets loaded with photographs included) will be a moving experience. These are not just rarities, these are genuine masterpieces with great value in my anthology in progress of 401Dutch and Flemish operas. When I interviewed conductor Frits Celis on his work for Flemish opera and Herbergprinses in particular, he told me that the fancy fair scene in Herbergprinsess ‘inspired’ Charpentier to copy it in Louise’s 'scene de couronnement'! As a bonus we have added no less than 10 78 RPM recordings of Herbergprinses (hitherto only 1 was thought to exist!). In addition, we added the separately recorded second act conducted by Daniel Sternefeld in 1960. And an aria of our own 401Concerts 2 recording of Jan Rabo's drinking song, by Joris Grouwels, recorded in 2016. Learn More

  • JAN BLOCKX - DE BRUID DER ZEE (Bride of the Sea) (1962 integral audio recording)

These are not just rarities, these are genuine masterpieces with great value in my anthology in progress of 401Dutch and Flemish operas. Of the Blockx operas, Bruid der Zee is my personal favourite. As a bonus we have added no less than 10 78 RPM recordings of Bruid der zee (hitherto only 4 were thought to exist!). In addition, we added our own 401Concerts 2 recording of the beautiful second act duet between Kerlien and Free, as performed by by Joris Grouwels and Pauline Lebbe in 2016. Learn More

  • JAN BLOCKX - LIEFDELIED (Love Song) (integral audio recording)

Liefdelied (Love Song) is the third part of the Blockx opera trilogy on city-life (Herbergprinses), sea-life (Bruid der Zee) and farm-life (Liefdelied). After the failed premiere in 191 it was only once revives, in the 1960. it is of this revival that we discovered a unique private recording. For those interested in Flemish opera, listening to this recordings (libretti and 150+ page Dutch/English pdf-booklets loaded with photographs included) in line with the other two parts that we have likewise published, will be a moving experience. These are not just rarities, these are fascinating masterpieces with great value in my anthology in progress of 401Dutch and Flemish operas. The star of this Liefdelied production, Erika Pauwels (see our video interview with her) considered Berthilde one of her favourite Flemish opera roles. With conductor Frits Celis we discussed the merits of the work, in the pdf-booklet as well as on the video interview on our website. As a bonus we have added a unique 1960s interview with Frits Celis on the production, where he guides us through the performance. Learn More
