Richard Hageman (1881-1966) was the only Dutch composer to see a self-composed opera performed at the Metropolitan Opera House New York. He was a child prodigy who performed as a concert pianist by the age of six in his native the Netherlands, conducted at the Concertgebouw Orchestra while still a teenager, before moving to the USA here he became a principal conductor at the Metropolitan Opera House. His only opera, Caponsacchi, was a hit in Freibürg 1932, then also in Münster and Vienna. It was torn apart by New York’s critics, but the audience loved his catchy tunes. Not surprising, since he had previously composed some classics in the great American songbook, among them the still popular ‘Do not go my love.’ From 1938 onwards, Hageman became associated with Hollywood and contributed music in part or altogether for no less than 51 movies, among them the 1938 blockbuster ‘Stagecoach’, for which he received an Oscar. Although he was beyond doubt the most successful Dutch composer of the 20th Century, and also the first (of five) Dutch Oscar winners in history, and the only one in the very competitive film music section, not even a street has been named after him in his native country. Our unique MP3 download DO201301 gives a survey of the little that remains from his output in terms of historic recordings of the pre war era.
